I'm a big fan of CSS-based design (throw away those ugly <table> tags will you!) and this site really showcases just how powerful it can be. Unfortanetely I don't quite have the creative talent of the designers on show there but that's no reason not to use the technology.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-08-01T00:30:22Z</dcterms:modified>

I'm a Tech Talk Blogs Guest Blogger!

Well that's just plain scary! I'm one of the guest bloggers over at Tech Talk Blogs for the next month or so, sharing the spot with others who have lots of impressive initials after their names and accolades to brag about. I'll be flying the flag for the little people, you know, the one's who are only just starting on .NET 2.0 stuff having been caught in 1.1 projects for what seems like an eternity, and perhaps don't use SQL Server for their database, shock horror!

The performance benefits of using bind variables are HUGE and cannot be underestimated.

So instead of doing this:

string sql = "select * from SOME_TABLE where ID = " + id.ToString();
OracleCommand cmd = new OracleCommand(sql, _conn);
OracleDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader();

Do this:

string sql = "select * from SOME_TABLE where ID = :p_id";
OracleCommand cmd = new OracleCommand(sql, _conn);
cmd.Parameters.Add("p_id", OracleDbType.Decimal, Convert.ToDecimal(id), ParameterDirection.Input);
OracleDataReader rdr = cmd.ExecuteReader();

The project I'm currently working on is a new release of an internally developed app I worked on 2 years ago. It was our first .NET on Oracle project and we didn't know of the many benefits of using bind variables in our SQL & DML statements. I have spent the last few days refactoring as much of the DAL code as I can to use bind variables and the effects on performance are astonishing. My understanding of the reasons is limited but basically if you use bind variables to pass in variable values to your queries, the Oracle SQL parsing engine can re-use much of the work it does when executing the queries when the values of the variables change. Plainly put, the query never changes, only the values do, and this means that execution plans can be re-used, etc. An added bonus is that it effectively paramaterises your queries, making them immune to SQL injection attacks.

I found a handy article today in relation to using bind variable to pass a list of values to a SQL IN statement. I've implemented the suggested pattern and it works a treat! Just note that you'll have to read a fair way down the page to get to the example code that relates to the more recent versions of Oracle (9 & above). Just search the page for "Delimiter December 29, 2004" to find it.

Update: Found another great getting started article today on bind variables on OTN at http://www.oracle.com/technology/oramag/oracle/05-sep/o55odpnet.html. Check it out.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-06-19T01:35:37Z</dcterms:modified>

Victoria.NET Regional Conference

THIS IS THE VICTORIAN ICT EVENT OF 2006!

Clicking on my left nostril will take you off to the newly launched Tech.Ed 2006 Australia website, where once again you'll come across my likeness, as well as those of some other people I know.

Yes, for the next 3 months I am officially 'Tech.Ed' having been convinced by Frank Arrigo to take part in the promotional activities this year. It's farily surreal seeing your own face plastered across the front of a website like Microsoft's but at the same time it's pretty exciting too!

This year's event looks set to be the best yet with a real focus on the attendees having fun and being made to feel a little special. The educational aspect is back with a vengence too with heavily discounted MCP exams being offered during the event once again.

My work is set to send 3 people again this year, which will attract a nice discount if we register before June 9, as well as getting cool personalised Tech.You t-shirts (no prizes for guessing what mine will say). I am currently checking out potential places to stay during the week and all in all it's shaping up to be a fantastic week.

So get over there and register now!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-05-24T04:38:21Z</dcterms:modified>

Code Camp Oz 2006: Day two

It's the second and final morning of Code Camp Oz 2006. Wagga Wagga is putting on beautiful fresh autumn weather for us today which is nice. Yesterday afternoon saw some really good sessions, especially Sharepoint 3 and a session on Software Factories and the Guidance Automation Toolkit by one of my favourite presenters, Readify's Martin Granell. This is an area I'm really interested in and something I would love to put the effort into at my workplace so that we can quickly turnaround true enterprise-class applications using best-practises and some of what we've learnt too.

Today's sessions I'm looking forward to include ATLAS, and intro. to TSQL. Having only developed on Oracle I have very little exposure to TSQL but it's something worth knowing.

Last night after the sessions we enjoyed some of the offerings of the CSU's on-campus winery and cheese factory. As a student I actually get 25% off when purchasing their produce so I might have to visit the cellar door sometime before I leave. After that was dinner at another local place which we bombarded with our endless geek-talk as the discussions swung from the nuances of bubble sorting a billion items to whether Word really is any good as a database platform.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-04-23T23:49:52Z</dcterms:modified>

Code Camp Oz 2006: The First Morning

First session was about Windows Workflow Foundation, which I really liked. Something I definately want to look more at over the coming 12 months, in particular possibly replacing some custom stuff we have in certain apps with a WF-based system.

Second session was an excellent informal discussion about starting and running user groups, something I am looking to do this year in Ballarat.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-04-23T01:26:24Z</dcterms:modified>

Arrived in Wagga Wagga for Code Camp Oz 2006

Well I have arrived safe and sound in Wagga Wagga for Code Camp Oz 2006. It's quite a long drive from Ballarat to Wagga Wagga but I'm sure the journey here and back is worth it. I'm particularly looking forward to the sessions on Atlas and starting & running user groups. I'll post a summary of my experiences during the event. Tonight I'm off to a local mexican joint to join in the pre-event drinks & dinner session. I had planned to post some photos during my stay but turns out I brought the wrong USB cable for my camera! So the crappy VGA resolution of my Smartphone camera will have to do.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-04-22T09:13:05Z</dcterms:modified>

"HTTP 401: Access Denied" error trying to call WSE web service

This one has been in the back of my mind for a few weeks as something I knew I had to fix. Starting looking at it again yesterday and after 3-4 hours of refactoring and config. changes I still couldn't get it to work.

Of course, leave it over night, start afresh in the morning, do a new web search using terminology discovered in my sleep and an answer presented itself, and what's more it was so bleeding obvious I had to kick myself!

I was getting an HTTP 401: Access Denied error trying to call a web-service on my local machine. I'm also using certificate encryption and message signing via WSE 2.0 so I thought it was something to do with that. The calling app was a WebForms test harness so I created a WinForms test harness just to make sure it wasn't something to do with that. It wasn't, same error whether calling from ASP.NET or WinForms.

In the end, turns out that web service calls are not made in the context of the user running the calling app. The request actually has no credentials associated with it, so if the web service resource on the web server, in this case the .asmx file, requires authentication you'll get, surprise surprise, a 401 error. Duh!

So, two choices to fix. Either make the web service accept anonymous requests by changing the security config of the application's virtual folder in IIS (and ASP.NET), or pass some credentials along with the web service call. The second one is easily achieved by setting the Credentials property of the web service proxy class to some valid credentials, this line sets it to the current user's credentials:

    proxy.Credentials = System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials;

(see this MSDN article for more details)

But in our scenario I've chosen to let the web service accept anonymous requests as it makes deployment a lot easier and doesn't sacrifice any security because we are using message-level authentication, authorisation, encryption and signing via WSE to secure the transaction.

Looking back at it now I can't believe we didn't see it eariler, but hey that's coding.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-03-21T10:47:06Z</dcterms:modified>

Code Camp Oz 2006

I will be going to Code Camp Oz again this year in about a month's time. I really enjoyed last year's event and hope that this year will be even better. I am staying in a much nicer hotel this year after the woeful experience of staying in a caravan park cabin last year, with no Internet access, no restaraunt and nobody around to hang with.

I will be driving up from Ballarat and can pass through Melbourne if there is anybody needing a free lift there and/or back. I could take upto 3 people. My work has been kind enough to supply a pool car for the journey so there would be no charge to hitch a lift. I will be leaving Ballarat on the Saturday morning sometime, and leaving Wagga Wagga on Anzac Day morning. If you are interested send an e-mail to the address on the Code Camp Oz 2006 travel page and mention my name.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-03-21T10:20:18Z</dcterms:modified>

Problems adding ASP.NET custom controls to the toolbox (VS.NET2003)

Well after swearing at the screen and jumping up and down for the last hour I have figured out my problem: which was getting an error message when trying to add an ASP.NET custom control to the toolbox in Visual Studio .NET 2003. The message was something linke "Unable to load assembly <assmebly path>. Check that any required dependencies are installed". The .dll in question was a very simple ASP.NET control library containing 2 custom controls I wrote ages ago. After mucking around with and opening and closing files, re-compiling and citing various ancient religious chants I had an epiphany. The .dll I was trying to add was on our build server, which I hadn't set up a .NET security policy for! So I just added a new Code Group for the build server path with FullTrust rights and hey presto, the thing added! Hope this helps someone.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-03-03T00:59:55Z</dcterms:modified>

ASP.NET 1.1 & 2.0 on Windows XP breaks the VS.NET 2003 debugger

I rebuilt my system only last week due to it going to "blue-screen heaven" and hadn't tried to debug anything in VS.NET 2003 until today. Imagine my horror when I received a nasty message from VS saying the debugger failed to start on this server (localhost). The only thing majorly different from my last build was that I have v2.0 of the .Net Framework installed. Turns out the registration of ASP.NET 2.0 stopped the 1.1 debugger from starting because when I ran "aspnet_regiis -u" from the v2.0 framework folder to uninstall ASP.NET 2.0, the debugger started working again!

It seems a little strange that the two won't work together so maybe there is a way to have them co-exist on the same dev. machine that I don't know about. If anyone reading this does know, please leave a comment!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-02-13T04:56:13Z</dcterms:modified>

WinForms Validation Code

When trying out some of the new WinForms features I quickly set about seeing how validation in winforms had changed. Turns out it hasn't

You see, my history is in web development and as such I have enjoyed one of best features of ASP.NET 1.1, the validation controls. When I went to create my first WinForms application I was shocked that there were no equivalent controls for doing form validation. Instead you get the ErrorProvider component (extender control even?) that you can use along with the appropriate control and form events to display a little icon next to controls that need attention. Hmmm, not quite the same development experience as ASP.NET. So I went about devising a routine for validating forms in WinForms.

In the end all it is is a few IsValid() methods but I think it makes it fairly simple to setup validation code and use the error provider. First of all, there is an IsValid() method that takes the control to validate and a string to store any validation error message. It returns a boolean to indicate whether the control's value is valid. The body is basically a large case statement (on the control's name) containing the validation logic for each control. Simple enough.

This method is used in a couple of ways. Firstly it is used by universal handlers for the controls validating events (or other events if more apppropriate) to set the error provider message on the controls. Secondly it is used by an overload of the IsValid() method that is for validating the whole form, or any group of controls really.

The second IsValid() method takes a Control.ControlCollection and a StringCollection to return the validation messages in. It just loops through the controlCollection and calls the first IsValid() method for each of them. Fairly simple but as I said, it results in a fairly clean and as easy to maintain set of validation functions.

You can grab the code here.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2007-10-21T08:54:28Z</dcterms:modified>

VDNUG Hands-on Day

The newly formed Victoria .Net User Group had its hands on day over the weekend which I was luck enough to get a seat at. I had been up late most nights last week working on my latest uni assignment so the 5:40 AM start on Saturday was a bit of a challenge, although to my surprise it was bright and beautiful at that time of morning, and the drive to Melbourne was quite enjoyable with little traffic to be seen.

Highlights of the day for me were experiencing the improved IDE of VS2005 for the first time while actually writing code. I am going back to working on a WinForms project this week so I was keen to see what improvements had been made there. Turns out a heap! I am seriously considering porting the current project straight to VS2005 Beta 2 as the productivity gains seem to be huge. I also think the ClickOnce technology could be a real step up from the current MSI setup I have. Seeings as there is less than a month to the launch of the final product, it seems a little backward to keep developing new projects in VS2003 so the next week or two will see me exploring whether that idea really is workable in our environment or not.

Here's hoping!

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-10-16T23:20:46Z</dcterms:modified>

More Tech Ed, especially the party!

Well it's Friday afternoon at TechEd on the Gold Coast and I need to quickly post about the party last night. Wow! I haven't been to a theme park in about 15 years so it was pretty exciting for me. The atmosphere was surreal upon arrival with the rent-a-crowd cheering us on the red carpet into the park and then characters in full costume roaming the streets as waiting staff stood at impressively stocked drinks tables. The food was even more impressive with a smorgasboard of different tastes available all over the park. We managed to go on 3 of the 4 open rides: Scoobie Doo Spookie Coaster, Wild West Ride and Lethal Weapon. All were great, but the Lethal Weapon takes the cake as the most insane thing I think I've ever experienced. The build up helped as standing in line approaching the ride over 1/2 an hour, the sounds of screams and the blur of passing riders only grew louder and faster. I was seriously packing myself by the time they strapped me in. What followed was an unstopping journey of pure speed and terror. Unreal! I couldn't walk straight for 5 minutes after I got off! Too cool.

I splet in a little longer this morning as a result of the party last night but still made it here in time for the first session. I have been having a little trouble picking sessions that actually go into a level of depth I am satsified with. I am finding too many end up being quite high level or just repeats of what I have seen previously at user group meetings and the like. I think what is needed is more session like there were at Code Camp this year, with real world examples of how to do enterprise level stuff, not just brochure-ware demos of new & upcoming MS products, although of course they have their place too. Perhaps the levels assigne to the sessions needs to be readdressed or something, not sure, but I definately would like to see more experts showing best practise ways to deliver solutions, and using products that I use right now, not what I'll be using in 6 months.

Photos will come shortly once I can get them out of my SmartPhone. Ciao for now.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-09-02T02:46:32Z</dcterms:modified>

All things Tech Ed

Here I am on the Gold Coast at my first ever Tech Ed and I feel the urge to share some thoughts and feelings. Lets start from the, well, start.

Flight was good, some nice cloud formations and Virgin Blue was really good (the bar-code based check-in is the stuff dreams are made of). It never ceases to amaze me how quick it is to fly around the eastern seaboard.

We got in on Monday evening (there are 2 other guys from Ambulance here with me) and experienced a maxi-taxi ride to remember. The grinding sound of a diesel engine being strung beyond all natural limits at every gear change at the hands of a merciless driver keen to get us to our hotel quickly so she can move onto the next job is something to behold. I never thought a van could pull away from lights like that.

The apartment lived up to all expectations and even exceeded some but unfortanetly we are right next door to a construction site and it turns out the workers insist on starting very early in the morning, with loud banging and whirring cranes moving equipment around at a time I usually associate with hitting the snooze button.

The first day was TechEd Student Day and as I am still studying my masters I registered and went along. I stayed long enough to see the excellent session on Dystopia, a game built on the Half Life 2 engine, Source, using Visual Studio, by some guys (mainly ozzies) in their spare time. The premise for the game was brilliant and the delivery was spot on with amazing visuals and a great sounding plot-line. After hearing so many high school students answer the question "What sort of programming do you want to do?" with "games" at my recent seat at a local careers information evening, it was really good to actually learning a little more what is involved with it these days.

After that was the XBOX welcome party, which was pretty darned tootin' I've got to say. The night started with pizza, boutique beer on tap and great hotdogs and was well attended, including a great set by local band Kiss Chasey. After quite a few drinks Joe and I jumped in the inflatable boxing ring and donned the oversized boxing mits to go a few rounds with each other. All I can say is that we both have a much better appreciation for how unfit we are now as we were absolutely knackered by the end of it and took quite some time to recover over numerous ice waters. Eeek, I really need to get fit again! We finished the night with some pool in the games room at the resort. Good beginning.

Today was the first day of sessions. The keynote covered a few different areas with the highlight for me the preview of cool new visual effects in Windows Vista and a demonstration of an amazing use for Indigo web services. It involved a service monitoring what was being watched on a Windows Media Centre PC and prodiding interaction (like shopping) and alerting based on the programs detected. Really cool.

The next two sessions I went to were on Visual Studio Team System 2005, with the first comprising of an overview of the main features of VSTS followed by a peek under the covers at the architecture that makes it all tick, including ways to customise and extend it. The next session was to be about managing the software development lifecycle using VSTS but the first 15 minutes was basically the same overview I had just seen and had seen many times before, so I bailed and checked my e-mail.

That leads me to the so-called wirless access that is being provided at TechEd this year. Maybe I read too much into it at some point but I was under the impression that when I registered, paid my fee and answered in the positive to the question of did I have a wireless device, that there would be free wireless access provided throughout the event. And I was right, sort of. Turns out that details provided hook you up to the Telstra wireless hotspot onsite for one hour only, after which you are expected to pay. Hmmm, yeah right. We signed up to another provider that had really good reception from our apartment and was only $29.95 for 7 days so the prices Telstra was trying to push were a bit much to take. Never mind, there are at least heaps of terminals provided at the event with net access so I can check e-mail between sessions.

Other sessions attended today included ASP.NET 2.0 and databinding, best practices for SharePoint Portal Server deployment, and new features in VB.NET 2005. Not too bad but I am looking forward to some of the more diverse topics I am planning on attending tomorrow.

This evening's social event was the 'Ask the Experts Forum' which was really just all the speakers and other MS (and non-MS) people in the exhibition hall at the relevant stands or just walking around talking to people. I guess this is what these events are really about, taking advantage of the oppurtunity to not only talk to experts and ask questions about scenarios face to face but also to network with and mingle with these personalities that you feel like you know already due to hearing them speak at so many events and user group meetings and/or reading their blogs and articles all the time. I don't hide the fact that I aspire to work for Micorosft, or one of their well known partners, one day and I think taking the time to not only get to know some of them but become known myself (for good stuff that is) is really important. In fact, while sitting in the sessions today I said to myself "I'm going to be a speaker at next year's TechEd". No idea what I'd talk about just yet, but that's just semantics really

OK, I could go on and on but none of this is really useful and it's getting late and tomorrow is another big day of sessions followed by the offical Tech Ed party at Warner Bros Movie World, so I think I'm going to need all the energy I muster, and those construction site workers' alarms will be going off any moment now...

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-08-31T12:58:24Z</dcterms:modified>

TechEd 2005, here I come!

Well, I am finally getting to go to TechEd this year, and what's even better I've got 2 mates from work coming too! Five nights on the Gold Coast, I can't wait! Flights all are booked and we are checking out accomodation now.

I am really stoked about finally getting to go and I certainly plan on making it an annual venture now, one way or another.

See you there.

Our presentation seemed to be well received although we were a little pressed for time in the end. We didn't get to show a single line of code in the end but I think we did manage to convey the overall experience we have had with .Net in RAV.
If anybody has any follow-up questions please drop a comment here and I'll do my best to answer. I plan to do some articles surrounding the ASP.NET issues I spoke of last night (dealing with low-bandwidth clients) in the near future but by all means if you want some more detail on particular elements you saw last night, ask away.
A few people asked for links to some of the technologies and components we mentioned last night so here is a list, including a link to the slide deck.
Resources:

RAV - http://www.rav.vic.gov.au
Slide deck - http://files.tilda.biz/Presentations/MDNUGMay2005Presentation.pps.zip
MS Identity Information Server 2003 - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/miis2003/default.mspx
ComponentArt WebUI controls (Treeview) - http://www.componentart.com
BehaviorControls - http://www.gotdotnet.com/Community/UserSamples/Details.aspx?SampleGuid=29EAB61D-9B1C-4F8D-BD4F-4F0E45C04A7F
DHTML Behaviors - http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/?url=/workshop/author/behaviors/behaviors_node_entry.asp?frame=true
Paging & Sorting DataGrids with no ViewState - http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnaspp/html/aspnet-commondatagridmistakes.asp
Oracle ODP.NET - http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/dotnet/index.html
FaceSnap - http://www.c-vis.com/htd/fsnapf.html
MapInfo MapXtreme 2004 .Net API - http://extranet.mapinfo.com/products/Overview.cfm?productid=1849

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2005-05-25T04:47:03Z</dcterms:modified>

MDNUG Presentation Tonight

Well I am all prepared to give a presentation to the Melbourne Dot Net User Group tonight about how we (RAV) have used .Net in some major projects recently.
